P'elvis Live
P'elvis led off the night with a four-to-five minute airy beginning number that abruptly morphed into a surprisingly thrashing second song. This sudden transition felt like floating and then getting walloped with a huge jolt of energy. Throughout the set P'elvis proved the diversity of their talents by shifting from the experimental to a dark, stampeding groove. All of this was fronted by Chris Maddox's mind-bending, effect-heavy saxophone playing. P'elvis is obviously passionate about what they do, and their stage presence during songs was expressive and animated. ...the band offered little communication between songs. But the tunes spoke for themselves, exhibiting shades of Radiohead and Morphine. — Nic Sweatt, Rick's Cafe
An instrumental project, P'elvis melds traditional guitar-based rock with more
ambitious elements of sax-driven free-jazz. The band's skronky, noirish
soundscapes are fleshed out nicely on JetBlackItalic, the release of which
will be celebrated at this show. Naturally, playing instrumentals gives
P'elvis license to go nuts with its song titles, which on the new album
include "S&M Fiasco Pt.2" and "Myoclonic Jerk." — The Onion
Another great piece of vanguard playing came during
sax-guitar quartet P'elvis' ferocious opening set for
Russell Simins at the usually underwhelming UW
Memorial Union Rathskellar. These hard-skronking indie
veterans were so on top of their game that even the
terminally cool Simins stood up and took notice. — Tom Laskin, Isthmus
